Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Jonathan Solomon expressed hope based on the federal government’s announcement on Friday that it would soon introduce new federal child welfare legislation applicable to First Nations, which would be co-developed with First Nations.

“My heart has been torn apart for all these years, seeing our Mushkegowuk kids taken away from our parents and grandparents and communities, to be placed in homes of another culture, often with disastrous and even deadly results,” said Solomon.

“This is a system that is not our system. It’s a system that has been shoved down our throats since 1965.

“Everyone in our community knows what I’m talking about. And now I see some serious hope that we can all together start to actually turn this thing around.”
